In 2015, Stanhope became the first “LEGENDAIRY” capital of Australia, recognising the dairy industry’s contribution has made to the district. 

Stanhope is a small agriculture-based town known for its cheese production.

Stanhope’s famous son – Take the Stanhope Historical Walk and delve into local history. This self-guided tour highlights points of interest around the town, including the Sir John McEwen Park named after Stanhope’s famous son.

McEwen took up a soldier settlement block in Stanhope prior to becoming a powerful figure in Federal Parliament, leading the Country Party and briefly becoming Prime Minister after the drowning of Harold Holt off Portsea in 1967. McEwan is honoured by a memorial bust in the centre of town.
